I am a huge fan of babywearing. When Grey was an infant we used our Moby Wrap all.the.time. As he grew, we moved into an Ergobaby 360 especially for outings (this was a winner for our first two Disneyland trips). You can find out more about why I loved both of these in this blog post. However, as Grey continued to grow, and being that he has always been quite big for his age (usually in the 90+ percentile) wearing him became more difficult. Both of the carriers above will allow you to carry your child up to 35lbs and 45lbs. I would say for most parents this will be all you need to carry you from infancy to the preschool years. However, there are several reasons to buy a carrier made specifically for toddlers.
Better support. Support for both you and your child is of utmost importance when choosing a carrier. A carrier made specifically for toddlers will have taller and wider panels. This will provide the best support for you child. Better support for your child also means better support for you.
Safety. In addition to support a toddler carrier will ensure that your child won’t be too snug nor likewise fall out.
Active Lifestyle. If your family is really active, especially in an outdoorsy way, then a toddler carrier will allow your little one to participate in fun family activities like easy hikes, nature walks, and my personal favorite outdoor activity–a day at Disneyland 😉 .
Toddler Cuddles. If like Grey, your child still needs some extra cuddles from time to time, can’t sleep, or has come down with a cold, a toddler carrier is just what you need in your mama arsenal. They may be growing with each day, but they’ll always be our babies, right?
One of our favorite carriers is the Tula Toddler Carrier, which you can now purchase in the Misguided Mama Shop! The carrier can be used from about 18 months to 4+ years old and between 25 – 60 pounds (beginning when the child is a minimum 32 inches tall).
